May Moments: Calm Fittings, Growing Confidence, and Finding Your Bridal Self
May always feels like a threshold month. Spring is properly settled in, the light lingers longer in the evenings, and there’s a sense that everything is quietly stretching into something new. In the boutique here at Not Just Brides, it’s often a month of gentle contrast: calm mornings planning designs, followed by bursts of fittings, conversations, and last-minute creative problem-solving.
This year, I’ve found myself thinking less about “big moments” and more about the quieter ones that lead up to them.
The in-between moments matter
Weddings are often spoken about in terms of the day itself, but May is full of the in-between stages that rarely get mentioned. The second or third fitting where something suddenly clicks. The email that starts with “I wasn’t sure at first, but now I love it.” The nervous laughter that turns into confidence when a bride sees herself fully dressed for the first time.
These moments don’t always photograph well, but they’re often the ones I remember most.
Style is becoming more personal again
One thing I’ve noticed this spring is how individual brides are becoming with their choices. There’s less focus on fitting into a specific “bridal look” and more interest in how a dress feels when it moves, when you sit down, when you stop posing and just exist in it.
Some are leaning into simplicity with clean lines and soft fabrics. Others are bringing in texture, colour, or subtle vintage influences that feel deeply personal rather than trend-led. It’s less about transformation and more about recognition and feeling like yourself, just in a different chapter.
Conversations in the fitting room
There’s a particular kind of conversation that happens during fittings that I’ve come to really value. It rarely starts with certainty. More often it begins with hesitation:
“I’m not sure this suits me.”
“I didn’t expect to like this.”
“I thought I’d want something completely different.”
And then, slowly, things shift. Not because the dress changes, but because confidence builds. It’s a reminder that clothing in this context isn’t just about appearance - it’s about trust, comfort, and feeling safe enough to be seen.
A quieter kind of preparation
May is also when practical questions start to settle in: timelines, alterations, accessories, logistics. It can be easy for brides to feel overwhelmed by the number of small decisions that still need to be made.
But I always encourage slowing that down where possible. Not everything has to be decided at once. Some things become clearer with time, and some choices are better made when you’re not rushing towards them.
Looking ahead to summer
As we move further into the year, there’s a shift towards anticipation. Summer weddings begin to feel closer, more real, less abstract. Dresses that have been in progress for months are nearing completion. Final fittings are pencilled in. Veils are chosen. Shoes are tested on carpet, then on real floors, then sometimes changed entirely.
And through all of it, the most important thing hasn’t changed: the aim isn’t perfection - it’s presence.
To feel comfortable enough to enjoy the day as it happens, rather than trying to manage every second of it.
Until next month
May always feels like a reminder that things don’t need to arrive fully formed to be meaningful. Whether it’s a dress, a decision, or a feeling about your wedding day, there’s value in letting things unfold gradually.
More next month,
Claire x
